Supplements and Nerve Medications: Gabapentin, Blood Thinners, Diabetes Medicine

Quick answer

Supplements and nerve medications can mix, but a few SciatiEase ingredients need a doctor's check first. Feverfew may slow clotting, which matters with apixaban (Eliquis) or warfarin. Passionflower can add drowsiness to gabapentin or pregabalin. Lipoic acid may lower blood sugar, and metformin lowers B12. Keep taking prescribed medicine and ask your pharmacist before starting.

Overview01

Can you take SciatiEase with other medications?

Often yes, but only after your doctor or pharmacist checks your list. SciatiEase is a dietary supplement, and several of its ingredients can affect how some medicines work (NCCIH, Using Supplements Wisely).

No study has tested SciatiEase with any drug. The flags below come from what is known about each ingredient on its own. Bring the bottle, or a photo of the panel, to your next visit.

SciatiEase ingredients with known or possible medicine interactions. Single-herb amounts are hidden in a 50 mg blend, so the size of any effect is unknown.
IngredientMedicines to ask aboutWhat may happen
FeverfewApixaban (Eliquis), warfarin, other blood thinnersMay slow blood clotting (NCCIH, Feverfew)
Chinese skullcapWarfarin, statinsMay add to warfarin in lab data; lowered statin levels (MSK, Scutellaria baicalensis)
PassionflowerGabapentin, pregabalin, sleep aids, anesthesiaDrowsiness, dizziness (NCCIH, Passionflower)
R-alpha lipoic acidInsulin, diabetes pillsMay lower blood sugar (Linus Pauling Inst., Lipoic Acid)
FolateMethotrexate, some seizure drugsCan interact (NIH ODS, Folate)
Vitamin B2Tetracycline antibioticsMay cut absorption; take hours apart (MedlinePlus, Riboflavin)

Gabapentin and pregabalin02

Can you take SciatiEase with gabapentin or pregabalin?

Ask your prescriber first. No study has tested the mix, but gabapentin often causes drowsiness, dizziness and unsteadiness (MedlinePlus, Gabapentin), and passionflower can cause drowsiness too (NCCIH, Passionflower).

The passionflower dose is small and hidden: as the second of four herbs in a 50 mg blend, it holds at most 25 mg. Even so, two products that cause drowsiness can add up, and alcohol adds more (MedlinePlus, Gabapentin).

A supplement does not replace gabapentin or pregabalin. Do not cut your dose to make room for one. Reviews show these drugs help sciatica less than hoped (Enke et al., CMAJ 2018), but any change is your prescriber's call.

Blood thinners03

Is SciatiEase safe with Eliquis, warfarin or other blood thinners?

Check with your doctor before taking SciatiEase with any blood thinner. Feverfew may slow blood clotting (NCCIH, Feverfew), and lab studies suggest Chinese skullcap may add to warfarin's effect (MSK, Scutellaria baicalensis).

Herbs and blood thinners are a known risk pair. Ginkgo with warfarin, for example, is linked to more major bleeding than warfarin alone (NCCIH, Herb-Drug Interactions). Apixaban (Eliquis) has not been studied with these herbs, so the safe choice is to ask.

  • Tell your prescriber or anticoagulation clinic before you start.
  • Report unusual bruising, nosebleeds or dark stools.
  • Feverfew should stop at least 2 weeks before surgery (NCCIH, Feverfew).

Diabetes medicine04

Does SciatiEase affect diabetes medicine or metformin?

It may. Lipoic acid can lower blood sugar, so people on insulin or diabetes pills should watch their readings (Linus Pauling Inst., Lipoic Acid). SciatiEase holds 250 mg of R-alpha lipoic acid per 4 capsules.

Metformin works the other way on B12: it can lower B12 absorption over time, and so can acid reducers (NIH ODS, Vitamin B12). SciatiEase has 1 mg of B12 per 4 capsules, but only a small share of an oral dose is absorbed.

The NIDDK advises people with diabetic neuropathy to talk with a doctor before using supplements (NIDDK, Peripheral Neuropathy).

Sedatives and other drugs05

Which other medicines need a check with SciatiEase?

Sleep aids, anxiety medicines, statins and some seizure drugs also deserve a check. Passionflower may slow the nervous system too much with sedating drugs and around anesthesia (NCCIH, Passionflower).

Chinese skullcap lowered statin blood levels in healthy volunteers, and it has liver injury reports (MSK, Scutellaria baicalensis). Valproic acid lowers carnitine levels (NIH ODS, Carnitine), and folate can interact with some seizure drugs (NIH ODS, Folate).

The four herbs share a 50 mg blend, listed most to least: feverfew at most 50 mg, passionflower 25, skullcap 16.7 and oat straw 12.5 (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)). Oat herb had no reported side effects when EU experts assessed it (EMA, Oat herb (Avenae herba)).

Small amounts lower the risk, but nobody has measured the effect. Your pharmacist can check the full list.

Quick check06

Should you check with your doctor before starting SciatiEase?

Yes, if you answer yes to any question below. The five questions cover emergency signs, blood thinners, sedating medicine, pregnancy and liver or diabetes care.

A yes does not rule SciatiEase out. It means the talk with your doctor comes first. Read more on who SciatiEase is for.

1. Do you have sudden leg weakness, numbness between your legs, or new bladder or bowel trouble?
2. Are you on a blood thinner, such as apixaban (Eliquis), warfarin or clopidogrel?
3. Do you take gabapentin, pregabalin, a sleep aid or another sedating medicine?
4. Are you pregnant, breastfeeding or younger than 18?
5. Do you have liver disease, or take medicine for diabetes?

Talk to your team07

How do you ask a pharmacist about a supplement?

Bring a full list of everything you take, including vitamins and herbs, and ask about each one. Pharmacists check interactions every day, and the advice is free.

  1. Bring the label

Show the Supplement Facts panel, not just the product name.

  2. Name every medicine

Include blood thinners, gabapentin, diabetes pills and sleep aids.

  3. Agree a plan

Ask what to watch for and when to check back.

Keep taking prescribed medicine

Never stop or change a prescribed drug because you started a supplement. Leg weakness, numbness between the legs or bladder changes need emergency care. See side effects and sciatica basics.

FAQ08

Supplement and medicine questions people ask

Can I take SciatiEase with gabapentin?

Ask your prescriber first. No study has tested the pair, but both gabapentin and passionflower can cause drowsiness (MedlinePlus, Gabapentin) (NCCIH, Passionflower). If you get the go-ahead, watch for extra sleepiness or dizziness, avoid alcohol and keep your gabapentin dose unchanged.

Can you take SciatiEase with Eliquis?

Talk to your doctor before combining them. Feverfew in SciatiEase may slow blood clotting (NCCIH, Feverfew), and apixaban (Eliquis) has not been studied with it. Report any unusual bruising or bleeding, and never stop Eliquis to make room for a supplement.

Can I take SciatiEase with warfarin?

Only with your doctor's approval. Feverfew may slow clotting (NCCIH, Feverfew), and lab studies suggest Chinese skullcap may add to warfarin's effect (MSK, Scutellaria baicalensis). Your clinic may want to check your INR more often if you start. Keep taking warfarin exactly as prescribed.

Can SciatiEase lower blood sugar with diabetes medicine?

It might. Lipoic acid may lower blood sugar, so people on insulin or diabetes pills should monitor readings (Linus Pauling Inst., Lipoic Acid). SciatiEase has 250 mg per 4 capsules. Tell your doctor before starting, check your readings more often and report any lows.

Should I take extra B12 if I am on metformin?

Ask for a B12 blood test first. Metformin can lower B12 absorption over time (NIH ODS, Vitamin B12). If you are low, your doctor will set the dose. SciatiEase holds 1 mg of B12 per 4 capsules, but it is not a substitute for testing.

Should I stop SciatiEase before surgery?

Yes, ask your surgeon, and plan to stop at least 2 weeks ahead. Feverfew may slow clotting and should stop 2 weeks before surgery (NCCIH, Feverfew), and passionflower may interact with anesthesia (NCCIH, Passionflower). Tell the surgical team about every supplement you take.

Can I take SciatiEase with a sleeping pill or anxiety medicine?

Ask your prescriber first. Passionflower can cause drowsiness and may add to sedating medicines (NCCIH, Passionflower). If you get approval, start at 2 capsules and do not drive until you know how it affects you. Avoid alcohol on the same evening.
