What Is Neuropathy? Types, Signs and Common Causes
What is neuropathy? Neuropathy, also called peripheral neuropathy, is damage to nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. It is often felt as tingling, burning, numbness or weakness in the feet and hands. Diabetes is the leading cause, and a doctor can look for the reason in your case.

What is neuropathy?
Neuropathy is damage or dysfunction of the nerves that carry signals between your body and your brain or spinal cord. Peripheral neuropathy affects millions of people in the U.S. (NINDS, Peripheral Neuropathy).
Nerves can carry feeling, movement or automatic body signals. Damage to each type causes different problems.
| Nerve type | Job | Possible signs |
|---|---|---|
| Sensory | Feeling and pain | Tingling, burning, numbness |
| Motor | Muscle movement | Weakness, cramps |
| Autonomic | Automatic functions | Dizziness, digestion changes |
What are the signs of neuropathy?
The signs of neuropathy are usually tingling, burning, numbness, pain or weakness, most often in the feet and legs. In diabetes they are often worse at night (NIDDK, Peripheral Neuropathy).
Symptoms often begin in the toes and creep upward. They tend to appear on both sides, which helps tell neuropathy from sciatica, a one-leg problem in most cases.
- Pins and needles in the feet or hands
- Burning or electric pain
- Reduced feeling, so injuries go unnoticed
- Weak grip or a tripping foot
Because numb feet miss small cuts, daily foot checks are advised for people with diabetes.
What are the common causes of neuropathy?
Diabetes is the leading cause of neuropathy. About two-thirds of people with diabetes have mild to severe nerve problems.
Other causes include vitamin B12 deficiency, too much vitamin B6, injuries, infections and some medicines. In some people no cause is found.
Low B12 can cause numbness and tingling (NIH ODS, Vitamin B12). Very high B6 over months can cause sensory neuropathy, and some reports are below 500 mg a day (NIH ODS, Vitamin B6). More is not always better.
That is why doctors often check blood sugar and B12 first. Metformin and acid reducers can lower B12 absorption.

See packsWhat should you do about neuropathy symptoms?
See a doctor for neuropathy symptoms so the cause can be found. Managing blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol helps keep diabetic neuropathy from worsening.
Pain medicines can ease symptoms but do not repair nerves. NIDDK advises talking with a doctor before using supplements.
Sudden weakness, trouble walking, numbness around the groin or bottom, bladder or bowel changes, or symptoms after an injury.
Keep taking prescribed medicine, and ask your doctor or pharmacist before adding a supplement. Supplement evidence is mixed, as the nerve supplements guide shows. SciatiEase is a capsule supplement that does not treat neuropathy. More background is in the guides hub.

FAQ01
Quick answers on neuropathy
Is neuropathy the same as nerve pain?
Not exactly. Nerve pain is one symptom, while neuropathy is the underlying damage, which can also cause numbness or weakness. NINDS describes neuropathic pain as pain from nerve damage. A doctor can find the cause.
Can neuropathy go away on its own?
Sometimes, if the cause is found and managed, such as a vitamin problem. In diabetes, managing glucose helps keep it from worsening. Do not assume it will pass, and see a doctor for tests.
Is peripheral neuropathy a disease?
It is a condition with many possible causes, not one disease. Diabetes is the leading cause. Treating neuropathy mostly means finding and managing the cause, then easing symptoms under a doctor's care.
