Supplements to Avoid With Gabapentin: Talk to Your Doctor
We cannot give a list of supplements to avoid with gabapentin, because safety depends on your dose, health and other medicines. Gabapentin can cause drowsiness and dizziness, so sedating supplements deserve a question. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before adding anything. Keep taking prescribed medicine.

Which supplements should you avoid with gabapentin?
No one can give you a safe or unsafe list without knowing your dose, your health and your other medicines. Your doctor or pharmacist can check.
What we can do is point to the kinds worth asking about. Gabapentin commonly causes drowsiness, dizziness, tiredness and unsteadiness, and alcohol can add to the drowsiness (MedlinePlus, Gabapentin). A supplement that also makes you sleepy deserves a question.
| Type | Why ask |
|---|---|
| Sleep or calming herbs | May add to drowsiness |
| Melatonin and similar aids | Sedating effect |
| Anything new in a blend | Amounts may be hidden |
| Antacid or mineral products | Ask about timing |
Why does gabapentin need extra care with supplements?
Gabapentin needs extra care because its main side effects are drowsiness and dizziness, and many supplements can act on the nervous system too. Stacking them is hard to predict.
Supplements can interact with medicines, and "natural" does not mean safe (NCCIH, Using Supplements Wisely). The FDA also advises against replacing prescribed medicine with a supplement (FDA 101: Dietary Supplements).
Gabapentinoids also show little benefit and more side effects for back and sciatica-type pain in a large review of placebo trials (Enke et al., CMAJ 2018). That is a reason to talk with your prescriber about the plan, not to stop on your own.
Keep taking prescribed medicine. Your doctor decides any change.
What is in SciatiEase that you should review?
We cannot say SciatiEase is safe with gabapentin. We can show what is on the label so your pharmacist can review it.
The herb blend holds passionflower, which can cause drowsiness, dizziness and confusion (NCCIH, Passionflower). It also holds feverfew, which may slow clotting (NCCIH, Feverfew). Single herb amounts are not published, but each is below the 50 mg blend total.
The vitamins and other lines are listed with amounts on the supplement facts page. SciatiEase has not been tested with gabapentin in any study we know of.
- Take the bottle or a photo of the panel.
- Ask about each line, not just the herbs.
- Ask if the 4-capsule serving changes anything.

FAQ01
Quick answers on gabapentin and supplements
Can I drink alcohol while using a nerve supplement and gabapentin?
Ask your doctor. Alcohol can add to gabapentin drowsiness (MedlinePlus, Gabapentin), and we do not know how any supplement changes that. Do not treat a supplement label as permission to mix them.
Is it safe to stop gabapentin and use a supplement instead?
No. Do not stop or replace gabapentin on your own. The FDA advises against replacing prescribed medicine with a supplement (FDA 101: Dietary Supplements). Talk with your prescriber about any change in plan.
What should I tell my pharmacist about a new supplement?
Share the full Supplement Facts panel, your dose and how often you plan to take it. Mention every other medicine and supplement too. The pharmacist can then check the combination for you.
