How strong is the PEA evidence for sciatica?
The evidence is low to moderate at best. The sciatica trial ran only 3 weeks, and the pain groups were assigned after the fact (Cruccu et al., CNS Drug Targets 2019).
The meta-analysis pooled few trials across mixed pain conditions. Its authors called study quality generally poor and asked for better placebo-controlled trials. Two co-authors worked for a company in the PEA field (Artukoglu et al., Pain Physician 2017).
That does not make the results false. It means they are a reason for more research, not proof. Most sciatica also improves with time. The NHS says it usually gets better within a few weeks to a few months (NHS, Sciatica).
A "number needed to treat" of 1.7 is a trial statistic. It is not the chance that PEA will work for you.
