Nerve Supplement Side Effects: Ingredient-by-Ingredient

Quick answer

Nerve supplement side effects depend on the ingredients. Carnitine can upset the stomach, high B6 can harm nerves, passionflower can cause drowsiness, and feverfew may slow clotting. Medicines can interact with some of these. Ask your doctor or pharmacist, and stop a product that disagrees with you.

What are the side effects of nerve supplements?

Most side effects are mild and come from a few ingredients. Stomach upset, drowsiness and harmless urine color are the common ones.

"Natural" does not always mean safe, and supplements can interact with medicines (NCCIH, Using Supplements Wisely). The risks depend on the dose, the ingredient and what else you take.

The table lists the best-documented effects for ingredients in many nerve formulas, SciatiEase among them.

Reported side effects by ingredient
IngredientReported effects
Vitamin B2Bright yellow urine; minimal other effects (NIH ODS, Riboflavin)
Vitamin B6Nerve damage at high amounts over months (NIH ODS, Vitamin B6)
FolateHigh folic acid can mask B12 deficiency (NIH ODS, Folate)
Alpha-lipoic acidRash, nausea, belly pain, vertigo; may lower blood sugar (Linus Pauling Inst., Lipoic Acid)
Acetyl-L-carnitineNausea, cramps, diarrhea, fishy odor near 3 g a day (NIH ODS, Carnitine)
PassionflowerDrowsiness, dizziness, confusion (NCCIH, Passionflower)

Can vitamins in nerve supplements cause nerve problems?

Yes, vitamin B6 can. Taking 1 to 6 g a day for months caused severe sensory neuropathy, and the US upper limit is 100 mg a day (NIH ODS, Vitamin B6).

Some reports came below 500 mg a day. The European Food Safety Authority set a lower adult limit of 12 mg a day in 2023 (NIH ODS, Vitamin B6). NINDS also names excess B6 as a known vitamin-related cause of neuropathy (NINDS, Peripheral Neuropathy).

The practical rule is simple. Add up B6 from every product you take, and do not stack B6 supplements.

B12 and folate

B12 has no set upper limit. Metformin and acid reducers can lower it (NIH ODS, Vitamin B12). Folic acid above 1,000 mcg can hide B12 deficiency (NIH ODS, Folate).

Which nerve supplement ingredients interact with medicines?

Herbs are the main concern. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about blood thinners such as warfarin or Eliquis, gabapentin, diabetes drugs and sedatives.

We do not know your medicines, so we cannot say any mix is safe. Keep taking prescribed medicine. Our medicines guide covers more.

What does this mean for SciatiEase?

SciatiEase holds several of these ingredients. Per 4 capsules it lists B6 at 20 mg, alpha-lipoic acid, carnitine and a four-herb blend with at most 50 mg of feverfew inside. The label images we have do not show the warnings, so read the bottle.

The B6 is above the EU limit of 12 mg, so avoid other B6 products. Its folate is 500 mcg DFE. Read our side effects page for the full list.

FAQ01

Quick answers on nerve supplement safety

Why is my urine bright yellow on a B vitamin?

Bright yellow urine is a known, harmless effect of riboflavin, vitamin B2 (NIH ODS, Riboflavin). It is not a sign of damage. If you also have pain, fever or other changes, talk with your doctor.

Should I stop a nerve supplement before surgery?

Ask your surgeon. Feverfew may slow clotting and should be stopped at least 2 weeks before surgery, and passionflower may interact with anesthesia (NCCIH, Feverfew) (NCCIH, Passionflower). Tell your care team about every supplement.

Can nerve supplements cause liver problems?

Rarely reported, and tied to one herb. Chinese skullcap has case reports of liver injury (MSK, Scutellaria baicalensis). Stop the product and call your doctor if you notice yellow skin, dark urine or severe tiredness.
