Nerve Pain Supplements Ingredients: A Glossary
Nerve pain supplements ingredients usually fall into four groups: B vitamins, antioxidants such as alpha lipoic acid, fatty-acid compounds such as PEA, and herbs. Most have small or mixed trials behind them. The SciatiEase label lists 12 lines in these groups, with amounts for 8 of them and the herb amounts hidden inside a 50 mg blend.

Which ingredients are in nerve pain supplements?
Most nerve pain supplements combine B vitamins, an antioxidant, a fatty-acid compound and a few herbs. Labels differ, so the list below is a map, not a promise.
The SciatiEase label is one example. It names 12 lines. The table gives each line, the amount per serving of 4 capsules, and a one-line meaning.
| Ingredient | Amount | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Vitamin B2 (riboflavin-5-phosphate) | 25 mg | Active form of riboflavin |
| Vitamin B6 (pyridoxal-5-phosphate) | 20 mg | Active form of pyridoxine |
| Folate (5-methyltetrahydrofolate) | 500 mcg DFE | Active form of folate |
| Vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin) | 1 mg | Active form of B12 |
| R-alpha lipoic acid | 250 mg | Antioxidant |
| Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) | 500 mg | Fatty-acid compound |
| Acetyl-L-carnitine | 250 mg | Amino-acid derivative |
| Benfotiamine | 200 mg | Fat-soluble form of thiamin (B1) |
| Feverfew, passionflower, Chinese skullcap, oat straw | 50 mg together | Herb extracts in a blend |
What do the B vitamins in nerve pain supplements do?
B vitamins help the body run normal nerve and energy chemistry. A shortage can harm nerves, but extra does not mean more nerve comfort.
The best-known link is B12. Low B12 can cause numbness and tingling in the hands and feet, and metformin and acid reducers can lower it (NIH ODS, Vitamin B12). If your levels are low, a blood test and your doctor come first.
B6 needs care. Very large amounts over many months can damage sensory nerves, and some reports come from doses below 500 mg a day (NIH ODS, Vitamin B6). The European safety agency set a limit of 12 mg a day in 2023, so the 20 mg on the SciatiEase label is above it. Do not stack several B6 products.
Our B vitamins page reads each vitamin line in detail.
What are alpha lipoic acid, PEA, carnitine and benfotiamine?
These four are the compounds most often named in nerve pain supplements. Each has some trial data, mostly small, and most trials used other doses than a typical label.
- Alpha lipoic acid is an antioxidant. Oral trials in diabetic nerve problems improved symptom scores but not pain scores (Hsieh et al., Nutrients 2023).
- PEA is a fatty-acid compound. A review found about a 2-point drop on a 10-point pain scale, from small trials of mixed quality (Artukoglu et al., Pain Physician 2017).
- Acetyl-L-carnitine is made in the body. A Cochrane review rated the pain evidence as very low certainty (Rolim et al., Cochrane 2019).
- Benfotiamine is a form of thiamin. Small studies saw milder symptoms, and larger studies are still needed (NIH ODS, Thiamin).
None of these results was tested in SciatiEase itself. See the SciatiEase ingredients page for the doses side by side.

See packsWhy are herbs listed in a blend on nerve supplement labels?
A label may group herbs in a proprietary blend and show only the total weight. The rule allows it, and the herbs must be listed from most to least by weight (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)).
On SciatiEase, feverfew comes first, so it holds at most 50 mg. Passionflower holds at most 25 mg, skullcap at most 16.7 mg and oat straw at most 12.5 mg. The real amounts are not printed.
Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood thinners such as Eliquis or warfarin, gabapentin, diabetes drugs or sedatives. Keep taking prescribed medicine. Numbness around the groin or bottom, bladder or bowel changes, weak legs or symptoms in both legs need emergency care.

FAQ01
Quick answers on nerve supplement ingredients
Why do some nerve supplements use active forms of B vitamins?
Active forms, such as methylcobalamin and pyridoxal-5-phosphate, are already in the shape the body uses. Makers say this helps absorption, but we found no trial showing better nerve outcomes. The SciatiEase label lists active forms for B2, B6, folate and B12.
Does a long ingredient list mean a stronger nerve supplement?
No. A longer list can mean smaller amounts of each item. Check the amount per serving and compare it with the doses used in studies. A line with no amount, such as a herb inside a blend, cannot be compared.
What does DFE mean on a folate line?
DFE means dietary folate equivalents. It converts folate from food and supplements into one unit so labels can be compared. The SciatiEase label shows 500 mcg DFE of folate per serving of 4 capsules.
