SciatiEase Medication or Supplement? The Difference

Quick answer

SciatiEase is not a medication. The bottle is labeled "Dietary Supplement" and holds 120 capsules of vitamins, nerve nutrients and herbs. Unlike a prescription, it is not approved to treat any condition. Do not use it in place of a medicine your doctor prescribed.

Is SciatiEase a medication or a supplement?

SciatiEase is a dietary supplement. The front of the bottle says so, along with "120 Capsules."

A medication is a product approved to treat or prevent a disease. FDA says a product marketed to treat a disease is legally a drug (FDA 101: Dietary Supplements). SciatiEase does not make that claim on the label. Its front says "Supports Nerve Health," which is a softer claim.

What is inside a SciatiEase capsule if it is not a drug?

A serving of 4 capsules holds four B vitamins, PEA, alpha lipoic acid, acetyl-L-carnitine, benfotiamine and a 50 mg herb blend. These are nutrients and plant extracts.

Some of them have been studied on their own. PEA at 300 or 600 mg a day was tested in people with sciatica for three weeks (Cruccu et al., CNS Drug Targets 2019). A bottle serving holds 500 mg. That does not make the capsules a proven product, because the trial did not test SciatiEase.

Can SciatiEase replace gabapentin or another prescription?

No, SciatiEase does not replace gabapentin or any other prescription. Keep taking prescribed medicine exactly as directed.

Never stop or change a prescription because of a supplement. FDA gives the same advice. A supplement can also interact with medicine, so tell your prescriber about it.

Ask first if you take any of these

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before starting if you use a blood thinner such as Eliquis or warfarin, gabapentin or another sedating medicine, or diabetes medicine. We do not know your medicines, so we cannot say it is safe with any of them.

How should you decide between a supplement and a medicine?

You should decide with a clinician, not with a bottle. The right choice depends on what is causing your pain.

Many cases of sciatica improve within weeks, and the NHS suggests staying active and using heat first (NHS, Sciatica). A clinician can find the cause and tell you whether medicine, therapy or a test is needed.

  1. Get the cause checked

Pain with a clear cause needs a different plan from pain without one.

  2. List what you take

Write down every medicine and supplement, with doses.

  3. Ask about the supplement

Show the Supplement Facts panel to your doctor or pharmacist.

Sciatica in both legs, numbness around the groin or bottom, bladder or bowel changes, weak legs or pain after an injury needs emergency care.

FAQ01

Quick answers on SciatiEase as a medicine

Do I need a prescription to buy SciatiEase?

No. SciatiEase is sold as a dietary supplement, so it needs no prescription. That also means no clinician has reviewed it for you. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting, especially if you take other medicine.

Is SciatiEase a pain reliever like ibuprofen?

No. Ibuprofen is a drug sold for pain. SciatiEase is a supplement whose bottle says "Supports Daily Comfort." It makes no drug claim, and we found no study of the finished product. Do not swap it for a pain medicine.

Can a supplement like SciatiEase cause side effects?

Yes. Supplements can cause side effects like medicines do. Possible issues include stomach upset, drowsiness and interactions. Read our side effects page, and stop and call your doctor if a capsule makes you feel unwell.
