How to Read a Supplement Facts Label, Line by Line

Quick answer

To read a supplement facts label, start with the serving size, then the amount and % Daily Value for each line, then any blend and the other ingredients. On SciatiEase, a serving is 4 capsules and a bottle holds 30 servings. Amounts on the label are the maker's claims, not lab results.

Where do you start when you read a supplement facts label?

Start with the serving size at the top. Every amount below it is for that serving, not for one capsule.

On SciatiEase, the serving is 4 capsules and the bottle has 30 servings. A bottle of 120 capsules lasts 30 days at 4 a day, or 60 days at 2 a day.

That matters for amounts. PEA is 500 mg per 4 capsules, so 2 capsules give 250 mg. Many readers miss this and compare the wrong numbers.

What does % Daily Value mean on a label?

% Daily Value shows how much of a typical daily need one serving gives. A high percent is not always better.

SciatiEase lists B12 at 41,667% DV because 1 mg is far above the small daily need. B12 has no upper limit set (NIH ODS, Vitamin B12). B6 is different: 20 mg is under the US limit of 100 mg but above the EU limit of 12 mg (NIH ODS, Vitamin B6). Do not stack B6 products.

Folate is listed as mcg DFE. The upper limit of 1,000 mcg applies to synthetic folate, and large amounts can hide a B12 shortage (NIH ODS, Folate).

A dagger or double dagger mark means no Daily Value is set. That is the case for PEA and several other lines.

How do you read a blend on a label?

A blend lists a total weight, then its ingredients in order from most to least by weight. The single amounts can be left out (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)).

The SciatiEase herb blend is 50 mg in total, covering feverfew, passionflower, Chinese skullcap and oat straw. By order, feverfew is at most 50 mg, passionflower at most 25 mg, skullcap at most 16.7 mg and oat straw at most 12.5 mg. These are ceilings, not real amounts.

The AlphaPalm Blend is 750 mg, but it shows both parts: R-ALA 250 mg and PEA 500 mg. Our supplement facts page reads every line.

  • Blends with no single amounts hide the dose.
  • Order of the list tells you the rank, not the amount.

What do other ingredients tell you?

Other ingredients are the non-active parts, such as the capsule shell and fillers. They matter for allergies and diets.

SciatiEase lists gelatin for the capsule, microcrystalline cellulose, vegetable stearate and silica. Gelatin means the capsule is not vegetarian.

FAQ01

Quick answers on reading a label

Why do some lines have no % Daily Value?

No Daily Value is established for them. PEA, acetyl-L-carnitine and the herb blend show a dagger mark for that reason. A missing percent does not mean the line is unsafe or useless; it only means no standard exists.

Does mcg DFE differ from mcg?

Yes. DFE means dietary folate equivalents, which adjust for how well different forms of folate are absorbed. There is no formal conversion factor for the 5-MTHF form, so the figure rests on the maker's chosen factor (NIH ODS, Folate).

Can a label amount be wrong?

Yes, it can differ from the real content, which is why independent lab reports matter. FDA does not check supplement labels before sale (FDA 101: Dietary Supplements). Ask the maker for a lab report for your lot.
