Feverfew and Skullcap: Herbal Blend Ingredients Explained

Quick answer

Feverfew and skullcap are two of the four herbs in the SciatiEase 50 mg blend, with passionflower and oat straw. Feverfew has small, mixed studies, mostly for migraine. Chinese skullcap has mostly lab data and some liver injury reports. Neither is tested in SciatiEase, and both call for a talk with your doctor.

What are feverfew and skullcap in SciatiEase?

Feverfew and Chinese skullcap are plant extracts in the SciatiEase herbal blend. The label lists feverfew flower extract and Chinese skullcap root extract, each at 4:1.

The blend totals 50 mg per serving of 4 capsules. Single amounts are hidden, which is allowed for blends (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)). Herbs are listed by weight, so feverfew is at most 50 mg and skullcap is at most 16.7 mg.

What does research say about feverfew?

Research on feverfew is limited and mixed. A 2020 review of 7 small studies with 634 people found inconsistent results, mostly for migraine (NCCIH, Feverfew).

We found no sciatica trial of feverfew. Any benefit for sciatica is unproven, and we do not assume one.

Feverfew can cause nausea, digestive upset and bloating. People allergic to ragweed may react. It may slow blood clotting, and it should not be used in pregnancy (NCCIH, Feverfew).

Before surgery

The source advises stopping feverfew at least 2 weeks before surgery. Tell your surgeon about every supplement.

Is Chinese skullcap safe to take?

We cannot call Chinese skullcap safe for you. It has mostly lab and animal data and has not been tested alone in clinical trials (MSK, Scutellaria baicalensis).

Reported problems include liver injury, in case reports of formulas that contain its compound baicalin. Lab studies also suggest it may add to the effect of warfarin and other blood thinners (MSK, Scutellaria baicalensis).

These are reports and lab findings. They do not show that the small amount in SciatiEase causes harm. They are reasons to ask before you start.

  • Have a liver condition? Ask your doctor first.
  • On warfarin or Eliquis? Ask your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Pregnant or nursing? Ask a physician.

FAQ01

Quick answers on feverfew and skullcap

How much feverfew is in SciatiEase?

The amount is not published. The label shows a 50 mg blend, and feverfew is listed first, so it is at most 50 mg. That is a ceiling from the label order, not a measured dose.

Can I take skullcap with warfarin?

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before you do. Lab studies suggest Chinese skullcap may add to the effect of warfarin. We do not know your dose or health, so we cannot say it is safe for you.

Should I stop feverfew before surgery?

Talk to your surgeon. The source we reviewed advises stopping feverfew at least 2 weeks before surgery, since it may slow clotting. Tell the surgical team about every supplement you take.
