Ingredient evidence
Do Neuropathy Supplements Work? Evidence by Ingredient
Do neuropathy supplements work? Evidence is ingredient by ingredient and mostly modest. Oral alpha-lipoic acid improved symptom scores but not pain scores. Acetyl-L-carnitine has very low-certainty evidence. Benfotiamine has small studies. B12 helps only in deficiency. Supplements do not replace diabetes care or medicine.

Do neuropathy supplements work?
Sometimes, a little, and mostly for symptoms. No neuropathy supplement has been shown to restore damaged nerves.
Diabetes is the leading cause (NINDS, Peripheral Neuropathy), and glucose control is the main way to keep it from worsening (NIDDK, Peripheral Neuropathy). Pain medicines ease pain but do not repair nerves (NIDDK, Peripheral Neuropathy).
Supplements are an add-on to that care. Keep taking prescribed medicine, and tell your doctor about every supplement (NCCIH, Using Supplements Wisely).
Does alpha-lipoic acid work for neuropathy?
Oral alpha-lipoic acid shows a partial result. A review of 10 trials with 1,242 people found better total symptom scores at 600 to 1,800 mg a day (Hsieh et al., Nutrients 2023).
It did not improve pain scores, vibration sense or nerve conduction (Hsieh et al., Nutrients 2023). Intravenous doses had stronger results, but capsules are not the same (Linus Pauling Inst., Lipoic Acid).
It may lower blood sugar, so people on insulin or diabetes pills should monitor it (Linus Pauling Inst., Lipoic Acid). See the alpha-lipoic acid page.
SciatiEase has 250 mg of R-alpha lipoic acid per 4 capsules. That is below the 600 mg lowest dose in these trials.
What about carnitine, benfotiamine and B12?
Their evidence is weaker or conditional. The table sums up each one.
| Ingredient | What studies found | Label dose in SciatiEase |
|---|---|---|
| Acetyl-L-carnitine | Four trials, 907 people; very low certainty. No difference from placebo at 1,500 mg or less (Rolim et al., Cochrane 2019) | 250 mg |
| Benfotiamine | 165 people, 6 weeks; one symptom score improved in one analysis (Stracke et al., BENDIP 2008) | 200 mg |
| Vitamin B12 | Deficiency causes numbness and tingling (NIH ODS, Vitamin B12) | 1 mg |
The carnitine fact sheet does not cover neuropathy, and high doses can bring stomach upset and a fishy odor (NIH ODS, Carnitine). See the acetyl-L-carnitine page.

See packsWhat should you check before trying a neuropathy supplement?
Check your cause, your medicines and your vitamin totals first. Three steps cover it.
Find the cause
Ask about diabetes, B12 and other causes. Excess B6 can cause neuropathy too (NINDS, Peripheral Neuropathy).
List your medicines
Ask your doctor or pharmacist about blood thinners such as warfarin, gabapentin and diabetes drugs.
Count your B6
SciatiEase has 20 mg per 4 capsules, above the EU limit of 12 mg (NIH ODS, Vitamin B6). Do not stack B6 products.
SciatiEase is a sciatic nerve formula, not tested for neuropathy. One bottle is $69.00 plus $6.95 shipping, with a 180-day guarantee. Red flags such as weak legs or bladder changes need emergency care.

FAQ01
Quick answers on neuropathy supplement evidence
Can supplements reverse nerve damage from diabetes?
No supplement is shown to undo nerve damage. Glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol control help keep neuropathy from worsening, and foot checks matter (NIDDK, Peripheral Neuropathy). Ask your doctor about any supplement.
Why did alpha-lipoic acid help symptoms but not pain?
The trials measured different things. Symptom scores improved while pain scales and nerve tests did not (Hsieh et al., Nutrients 2023). Scores like these are partly self-reported, so results can differ by measure.
Is a bigger dose of carnitine more likely to work?
The Cochrane review saw benefit only at 1,500 to 3,000 mg a day, with very low certainty (Rolim et al., Cochrane 2019). Doses near 3 g can cause nausea and cramps (NIH ODS, Carnitine). Do not raise doses without asking your doctor.
