Benfotiamine vs Thiamine: How the Two B1 Forms Differ
Benfotiamine vs thiamine is a comparison of two forms of vitamin B1. Thiamine is the vitamin found in food. Benfotiamine is a synthetic, fat-soluble form that the body converts to thiamine. Small studies tested benfotiamine in diabetic neuropathy, but larger studies are still needed. SciatiEase holds 200 mg per 4 capsules.

What is the difference between benfotiamine and thiamine?
Thiamine is vitamin B1, the form in food and in most multivitamins. Benfotiamine is a synthetic, fat-soluble derivative of thiamine, and the body converts it to thiamine (NIH ODS, Thiamin).
Both end up as the same vitamin. The difference is the starting form and the doses used in studies. Our benfotiamine ingredient page shows the label line in full.
| Item | Thiamine | Benfotiamine |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Vitamin B1 from food | Synthetic, fat-soluble B1 derivative |
| Adult RDA | 1.1 mg (women), 1.2 mg (men) | Not listed in the fact sheet |
| Upper limit | None set | Not listed in the fact sheet |
| Doses in small trials | Not the focus | 120-900 mg a day |
Is benfotiamine better than thiamine for nerves?
We cannot say it is better. Benfotiamine has small studies in diabetic neuropathy, and our sources show no head-to-head test against plain thiamine.
Three small placebo-controlled studies of 120 to 900 mg a day found less severe symptoms, but the NIH fact sheet says larger, longer studies are needed (NIH ODS, Thiamin). The BENDIP trial gave 165 people 300 or 600 mg a day for 6 weeks. One symptom score improved in one analysis, and the total symptom score did not differ (Stracke et al., BENDIP 2008).
Those results come from people with diabetic polyneuropathy. They were not tested in SciatiEase and do not show an effect on sciatica.
- Trials were small and short.
- Results differed by type of analysis.
- No comparison with plain thiamine appears in our sources.
How much benfotiamine is in SciatiEase?
A serving of 4 capsules holds 200 mg of benfotiamine. At 2 capsules, that is 100 mg.
Both amounts are below the 300 to 600 mg used in BENDIP (Stracke et al., BENDIP 2008). The label lists no plain thiamine, so benfotiamine is the only B1 form on the panel.
The brand's ingredients page lists 300 mg, but the panel says 200 mg. We follow the panel. The full reading is on our supplement facts page.
200 mg per 4 capsules means 50 mg per capsule. Two capsules a day give 100 mg.

See packsWho needs a thiamine supplement, and who should ask first?
Thiamine deficiency can harm nerves. Severe deficiency (beriberi) mainly causes peripheral neuropathy and muscle wasting (NIH ODS, Thiamin).
If you have numbness, burning or weakness, ask your doctor to find the cause. Low B12 and diabetes are common causes (NINDS, Peripheral Neuropathy). A supplement does not stand in for that check. Our B vitamins page covers the others on the label.

FAQ01
Quick answers on B1 forms
Is benfotiamine the same as vitamin B1?
Not exactly. Benfotiamine is a synthetic, fat-soluble form of vitamin B1 that the body converts to thiamine. Thiamine is the form found in food. On a label you will see benfotiamine listed as its own line.
Does benfotiamine have a safe upper limit?
No upper limit has been set for thiamin, and the NIH fact sheet lists none for benfotiamine (NIH ODS, Thiamin). That does not make any dose risk free. Stay with the label serving and ask your doctor about higher doses.
Can I take thiamine and benfotiamine together?
Ask your doctor or pharmacist. Both become thiamine in the body, so a multivitamin plus a benfotiamine product adds up. Check every label, and do not go above the serving size on any bottle.
